Premiering in 1879, Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House quickly rose to prominence because of its clear feminist themes. In this play, we see a female protagonist, Nora, who grapples with the identity issues that come part and parcel with defining oneself according to the men in one's life. Ultimately, Nora feels so suffocated by the roles thrust upon women (wife, daughter, mother) that she leaves her (annoyingly pompous and ignorant) husband.

Heading out on her own, Nora faces myriad unknowns. There are not many options for her life moving forward, since this is still a world in which women are defined by men. The ending leaves one feeling uneasy but empowered by someone willing to take her own life in her hands and do what feels right.
